Overview

Sam Steam Fish Head is a seafood restaurant tucked away in the bustling Cheras Maju commercial area of Balakong, Selangor. This unassuming spot has quietly won over diners with its signature steamed fish head, a dish that highlights the freshness of local catch and a delicate, flavorful broth. The fish maw accompanying the steamed fish head adds a pleasing texture to the dish, complementing the tender meat with a subtle richness.

Beyond their flagship fish head, the menu features a well-crafted selection of traditional Chinese seafood and meat dishes. Yong Tau Foo stands out as a crowd favorite—handmade on demand and freshly fried, it offers a comforting balance of flavors and textures, far from the pre-cooked versions common elsewhere. The vegetables, especially the Ipoh-style crunchy beansprouts, deliver a fresh and juicy bite that pairs perfectly with the hearty soy-based sauces.

The curry pork ribs are another highlight, with tender meat and savory potatoes soaked in a flavorful curry that leaves a lasting impression. For those intrigued by unique offerings, the steamed fish stomach presents a chewy experience reminiscent of squid, adding a rare twist that seafood lovers will appreciate. While the steamed village chicken may not match the excellence of the seafood dishes, it still provides additional variety for larger groups.

The space at Sam Steam Fish Head is both spacious and comfortable, with indoor and outdoor seating options suited for family gatherings or casual meals with friends. The atmosphere maintains a homey feel, reflecting the culinary experience of seasoned cooks who skillfully balance simple, unpretentious flavors with careful preparation.

Ideal for seafood enthusiasts and those seeking traditional Chinese dishes in the Cheras and Balakong vicinity, Sam Steam Fish Head delivers authentic, well-executed dishes that reward those who venture a little off the beaten path. The location may require some patience when it comes to parking, but the quality and value of the food make it well worth the effort. For a steady dose of savory steamed fish head, hand-crafted Yong Tau Foo, and comforting Chinese home-style favorites, Sam Steam Fish Head is a hidden gem that deserves more recognition.

My second times to comeback here. Simple and delicious home-cooked dishes especially I like their Yong Tau Foo …..fresh made upon order unlike most Yong Tau Foo in the market already made or cooked? Must- try their curry pork ribs with potatoes. Their soup veggies with homemade fish ball is so chewy and delicious. Won’t be disappointed to eat here. Good cook with many years experience.

Not the famous fishead from Chan Sow Lin but a good alternative to steamed fish carp head (though not as fresh) and a rare fish carp stomach dish which was chewy like squid. The yong tau foo is made by hand on demand before frying at RM2.00 each. Overall quite good value for lunch if you can find parking. The steamed village chicken disappointed due to the quality of meat. The curry pork ribs however is excellent.

It all depends on the freshness of the fish — sometimes it’s good, sometimes not so much. Overall, I’d say it’s above average. They also serve yong tau fu.
